Thanks, that's getting close, but it doesn't quite handle errors cleanly:

 > wrapper(junk=3)
Error in lowlevel(longname = 2, "NA" = 3) :
         unused argument(s) (NA ...)

It looks like I'll need something fairly elaborate.
