Abstract
Pattern recognition is beginning to be widely used - in microwave ovens,
to read mail addresses (even hand-written ones), in robot vision, in
financial trading and even in medical diagnosis. The talk will describe
some of the applications, and how they relate to things statisticians have
been and perhaps ought to become interested in, including logistic
discrimination, neural networks and predictive approaches to estimation.
