Die multivariate Statistik befasst sich mit der gemeinsamen Verteilung von mehreren Zufallsvariablen.
Viele Verfahren beruhen auf der mehrdimensionalen Normalverteilung. Analog zur univariaten Statistik befasst man sich mit der Unterscheidung zwischen Gruppen (Diskriminanzanalyse) und untersucht Einflüsse von Ausgangsgrössen (erklärenden Variablen) auf mehrere Zielgrössen (Regression). Hinzu kommen Verfahren zur Reduktion der Dimension (Hauptkomponenten, Ordination) und Suche von Gruppen (Cluster-Analyse).
Multivariate Statistics studies the joint distribution of two or more random variables.
Many procedures rely on the multivariate normal distribution. As in univariate statistics, differences between two or more groups of observations are examined (discriminant analysis), and effects of explanatory variables on several target variables are modeled (regression). In addition, there are methods for reducing dimension (principal component analysis, ordination) and formation of groups (cluster analysis).

Übungen bilden einen wichtigen Bestandteil dieser Vorlesung.
Die zweite Lektion in den Blöcken mit * in der obigen Tabelle ist jeweils
eine Übungslektion.
Es wird alle 2 Wochen ein Übungsblatt abgegeben.
Ein grosser Teil der Aufgaben wird die Analyse von konkreten Datensätzen
beinhalten und Grundkenntnisse in der Statistiksprache S voraussetzen
(s. unten)
