Thanks to all who responded.  We've got working code
(works on Microsoft OSs and Unices; not tested yet on Macs, but I
should be getting an iBook soon out of curiousity).  

It should be available by the end of summer in a general molecular
sequence analysis package (actually, long before then, but one never
knows...).  If you "really" need it, we can provide a preliminary
version in the next few weeks.
