I find Google's site search the most effective way to search mail archives.
I generally use the incantation (Example for R):

	site:r-project.org search terms here

to search the entire site, including email.  

To make this easier, and to share this trick with others, I've often wanted
to have a search box on bioconductor.org and r-project.org.

So, here's a simple form does the trick for r-project.org:

The obvious change makes it work for bioconductor.
