Post-Doctoral Position in Applied Bioinformatics
University of California, San Francisco

The Woodruff Laboratory of the UCSF Airway Clinical Research Center is a
rapidly growing laboratory that combines human studies of Asthma and
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with genome-wide gene
expression microarray analyses. To take optimal advantage of a large
existing tissue bank and ongoing clinical studies, we are pleased to
announce an opening for a Post-Doctoral Position in Applied
Bioinformatics.

Desirable experience: Computational biology with strong background in
genomics and systems biology.

Position: The position is funded by a grant from the NIH/NHLBI (R01 HL-
095372, Molecular Phenotyping of Asthma). The project has applied genomic
analyses to airway samples from patients with asthma to distinguish
Th2-driven and non-Th2-driven sub-phenotypes of asthma that have distinct
clinical, pathological and treatment-related characteristics. Ongoing
analyses are aimed at identifying gene expression markers in lung tissue
samples of inflammation and remodeling in these two sub-groups of asthma
and identifying whole blood gene expression markers of these clinical
phenotypes. Additional studies have been initiated using miRNA arrays and
applying similar approaches to study COPD and Interstitial Lung Diseases.
The successful candidate will integrate into an interdisciplinary team and

take charge of:
     * Modelling and analyzing comprehensive gene expression and
         regulatory networks using human samples
     * Integrating gene expression, miRNA expression and sequence
         variation data
     * Designing qPCR validation experiments
     * Integrating publicly available datasets with "in-house" data

Qualifications: Applicants should hold a PhD in a biological field,
bioinformatics, computational biology, applied mathematics, or an
equivalent subject. Motivated and broadly interested individuals willing
to operate in a multidisciplinary environment on challenging scientific
projects are encouraged to apply.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting date: March 2010. Contract will be initially for one year and is
renewable yearly up to 4 years maximum. Work site: UCSF Medical Center
campus, 513 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco CA 94143

Contact: For further information, please contact Dr. Prescott Woodruff
(Prescott.woodruff at ucsf.edu). To apply, please send a full CV, a statement

of interest and names of two references by e-mail.
