gcc memory requirement

Helgi Tomasson send thanks to people who helped get the compiled dse fortran to
work when he did R INSTALL. Some of my test programs reported Error: memory
exhausted (he had not used R -v6 -n250000 as in my test script). He now reports:

>understood why but the problem dissapered when I upgrade
>gcc and gcc-g77 from the contributed directory at sunsite.

I'm not sure why this should change the -n and -v memory requirement, but if
anyone knows I would like to hear.
