This is well-known and caused by use of a non-GNU make. Unfortunately,
we don't quite know how to work around it...

If you have GNU make installed and not called "make" but e.g. "gmake",
just do "cd etc ; gmake build-docs". Otherwise, the trick is to
replace the right hand side of the below definition in etc/Makefile
with its shell expansion.

MANSRC = ../src/library/*/man/*.Rd

or, for Solaris *only* (I think), you can replace it with this:

MANSRC:sh = echo ../src/library/*/man/*.Rd
