I'd be prepared to call this one an incorrectly documented feature. So in the
name of S compatiblity should one do as it says or do as it does? There is
clearly not very much code around which requires partial matching, since it
hasn't worked, but there may be things that break if it does work. Also, the
documention is not very clear about whether attr(x,"di") will return dim or
dimnames if both exist. As near as I can tell the documentation is not even
clear about whether attr(x,"dim") will return dim or dimnames, although the sane
choice seems to be made by [[.
