There was an old problem with the g77 compiler under RedHat Linux and
under the pre-release versions of Debian-2.0 Linux giving compiler
errors. Paul Gilbert encountered it while compiling his dse library
for R. Dirk E. also encountered it in compiling octave for Debian-2.0.

Over the weekend a new version of the binutils programs was made
available for the Debian-2.0 system (just in time for the code
freeze). The problem seems to be solved on Debian-2.0 with these new

 bash-2.01$ dpkg -s binutils
 Package: binutils
 Status: install ok installed
 Priority: standard
 Section: devel
 Installed-Size: 1895
 Maintainer: Galen Hazelwood <galenh@micron.net>
 Provides: elf-binutils
 Depends: libc6
 Conflicts: gas, elf-binutils
Description: The GNU assembler, linker and binary utilities.
The programs in this package are used to assemble, link and manipulate
binary and object files. They may be used in conjunction with a compiler
and various libraries to build programs for Linux.

These may be based on the egcs system rather than a stock gcc-2.8.
Galen has been creating a hybrid of gcc and egcs so the C++ compiler
from egcs can be used.
