Paul, the above behavior ``works'' with binary distributions
	(we have at least Debian and RedHat for Linux),
but never with source code distributions.

We are following  quite a standard approach for source code distributions
having the

	1)
	  ## Edit config.site manually if you want special behavior

	2) 
	  configure
		## configure with arguments if you want....

	3)
	  make

The only thing missing is a ``proper''

	4)
	  make install

which Kurt and Fritz (;-}) will probably provide for R 0.62
which seems to be due currently for Mid-June or so.
