I'm doing this only for compatability with Splus. In fact, the way I've used it
in my code is

   is.logical(all.equal(...))

which gives the T/F result.

I think the tolerance is a good idea. Thanks for pointing out other problems. I
just fixed one of them. I'll circulate a new version tomorrow.
