Problems compiling libraries with todays snapshot.

I am running 62.0 April 12 1998 under Slackware 3.4.0, and it compiled
painlessly (if that is any help at all). BTW with Slackware you've got to
make sure you've got readline library installed.  It isn't there in the
default distribution.
