S-PLUS has a pdf.graph graphics device, and from what I know of the S
(hence R) graphics model, it would be relatively easy to write a PDF
graphics device (no fancy commercial libraries needed). However, I am
not about to do it, as I can convert .eps files to .pdf in several ways
and do so regularly using epstopdf (perl script calling gs5.50 at
www.tug.org/applications/pdftex: even works on Windows). Converting
.pdf to .eps WELL seems rather harder.
