R vs Splus 5

The recent exchange on R-help has reminded me of a problem which I am wondering
if anyone has thought about (or solved). One of my initial interests in R was to
have at least two sources for the platform on which my library/package runs.
This is always desireable, and some places even legally required (though not
here).

After installing and briefly trying Splus 5 I have discovered that there will
probably be a substantial porting effort in order to get my library working - at
least if I convert to the new classes and methods. I am not inclined to do this
without some strategy for keeping things working in R. Has anyone thought about
how R will evolve relative to Splus 5?
