We are very grateful to Martin Maechler for working hard on tracking down
many such things. In the current R-release it reports (as it should)

> c(1,2,3) %*% c(1,2,3)[drop=TRUE]
Error in c(1, 2, 3)[drop = TRUE] : no index specified
