After all the discussion I decided to act, and wrote an XFig device
(for the standard postscript fonts only) which is now in R-devel.
Also, I implementing kerning for the postscript() device.

One thing someone may be able to help me with. XFig 3.2 implements
multiple pages, but does not say in the FORMAT how to split the file
into pages. If anyone knows, please let me know. (Some reading of the
code suggested this was perhaps not implemented except for printing.)
