I spoke too soon -- There is an operating system or hardware issue
involved

Today's pre1.0.0 reproduces Kjetil's bug on Solaris 2.7 with
 f77: WorkShop Compilers 5.0 98/12/15 FORTRAN 77 5.0
and
 gcc 2.95.2
On the same machine, but (I think) with earlier versions of both compilers
the bug also happens using a 13 Sept R-devel snapshot.

The bug does not happen with today's pre1.0.0 on Debian Linux
2.2.13-mosix, gcc 2.95.2,  GNU Fortran 0.5.25 19991030 

The fact that the _same_ large number is returned suggests some sort of
memory protection problem, though the machine-dependence doesn't.
