Now, it seems like this problem has been solved. Reading some old
r-help e-mail I had missed, I came across a message from Brad McNeney
(<URL:http://www.ens.gu.edu.au/robertk/R/help/00a/2068.html>), and it was
apparent that he has had the same problems as I, but solved it by using
gcc instead of cc. Recent communication between Ray Brownrigg and Prof
Brian D Ripley enabled me to compile and get R running myself, and indeed,
the problem has not occured in a number of runs after I did this, I look
upon it as solved.

So, it seems like it may be problematic to use the standard cc compiler on
the alpha platform with Digital UNIX to compile R. Just a minor status
report... :-)
