[Rd] classed or as

It was pointed out to me in a separate communication from Bill Venables
that the S4 as(,) function, instead of the classed( ,) function I
previously suggested, might result in a better strategy for developing
code that would run in both S3 and S4. (One of my reasons for defining
classed in the first place was to help get my code to run in both S3 and
S4.)

If I understand the previous discussion correctly, putting this function
in R base would also result in a speed-up relative to my interpreted
code.
