Nor me (after those changes).  *But*

Type ^Demo()' for some demos, ^Help()' for on-line help, or
^Help.start()' for a HTML browser interface to help.
Type ^Q()' to quit R.

is wrong: there should be no ^ there, and lower case, so I think your
machine is set in a strange character encoding, which would certainly
explain the problem reading the base R file.
