Actually, that's an S/S incompatibility:

S-PLUS : Copyright (c) 1988, 1996 MathSoft, Inc.
S : Copyright AT&T.
Version 3.4 Release 1 for Sun SPARC, SunOS 5.3 : 1996
Working data will be in .Data
cbind(data.frame(x=1,y=2), data.frame(x=4,u=3))
  x y x u
1 1 2 4 3

(We might of course still want to follow the more recent S-PLUS,
although perhaps not put too draconian measures in to keep names
unique.)
