Brian - I'm referring to the pipe/separate tools approach, which is
commonly referred to in the literature (late 80s, early 90s, on
computing tool design) as "the unix way", NOT to automated discovery,
which is the integrated/monolithic way (i.e. the 2 other OSs which you
mention).
