svm seg faults (PR#1901)

Which compiler is this?

I have no problems with svm() on RH7.2 compiling with either gcc 3.1 or
gcc 2.95.3: Red Hat make a habit of supplying unreleased (and buggy)
versions of gcc. I think this is particularly critical when C/C++ mixtures
are used (as in svm).

PR#1178 is another non-reproducible segfault in svm on Linux.
