OK, I understand. Thanks for explaining.

You're right, it doesn't work. I was a bit blinded by the fact that

split(1:10,list(a=1:2,b=1:2))

did what I expected, although I now understand that I should not rely on 
these results. Should have payed more attention to the help pages and 
the warnings.
