Not sure about your issue -- for Debian, we switched away from LAM to Open
MPI and everything is working just fine right out of the box.  Further, while
were converting to Open MPI, I had 'frozen' my work installation at the 'last
known' LAM release.  For some reasons, that was LAM 7.1.1* -- I never got
Rmpi to work with the later LAM releases.  

However, Hao Yu and I were able to iron all issues on Debian and Ubuntu and
Rmpi, R, Open MPI, ... should 'just work' with current versions. Also, the
LAM team suggests to move to Open MPI.
