In the foreign package, read.epiinfo() mistakenly reads the first character
of the heading lines as part of the variable name. This first character of
the heading lines which define the variables indicates a fill character
used by ENTERX.EXE to initially fill fields on screen. Typically this
character may be underscore ("_"), or pound ("#").
The function read.epiinfo() shouldbe fixed so that first character
is not part of the file name.
The use of this character is well-documented in the EPI6 manual
under the discussion of the .REC file heading.
Cordially,
GLC
