I agree that some customization possibility would be great here.
Maybe it'll be sufficient to allow a short list of about a dozen
words in the DESCRIPTION itself, e.g., with an item

Extrawords: rowMedians, rowRanks

Would you feel like providing a patch to the R (devel) sources
for this?
