Thank you for that.  I presume that refers to a 32bit version of debian
with 32 bit compiler suit?

I should probably have been more specific.  My Ubuntu machines are
64bit architectures and I install R as 32bit sub-architecture and 64
sub-architecture with the same compiler suite.  Well for the 32bit
compilation I specify the additional flag "-m32" to the (gcc) compilers.
