Something which seems missing from the current  R-FAQ
which mentions "mailing list archive":

    The 3 mailing lists   R-announce / R-help / R-devel 
    are not only archived,
    but the archives are also made publicly available on the net,
    in a monthly schedule at

	    ftp://ftp.stat.math.ethz.ch/Mail-archives/

    which is a directory of mail archive files.

    You will be looking at  
	    r-testers-... (the old scheme)
	    r-announce-...
	    r-help-...
	    r-devel-...
