R-beta: Problems porting nlme to R

For 'brave' read 'naive'.  I've also heard from Martin Maechler of the  
difficulties of the port, and have given up in the light of my expertise not  
matching the problem.  However, if you ever plan a full port of nlme I would  
be very grateful.  I have a problem waiting for its use, but no immediate  
access to S/S-Plus.
