Agreed. 

In the longer term, it might be nice to have it timer-controlled,
rather than #commands (model emacs), but it is more important to get
it done than to get it right first time.

downgrading from mm.nn to mm.(nn-1) would introduce the "feature" that
autosaves would only occur when the user was actually typing
something...]
