R-beta: edit figs with xfig?

The abovei, of course, is *one* of the ways to convert PostScript into a
bitmap prior to editing the bitmap with Xfig (Xfig calls on ghostscript for
the conversion, and for this ghostscript must be compiled to include the
"gif8" (for mono) and/or "pbmraw" (for colour) drivers; otherwise it won't
work at all; mine doesn't with B+W graphs, presumably because it doesn't
have gif8, even though it does have pbmraw.) Then, of course, if it works
you could make changes using Xfig and re-export as PS (using Xfig to
convert the bitmap to PS -- which, since it's PS representing bitmap, leads
to big files).

I still think that a more direct approach (e.g via "pic") would be better.
