As has been pointed out there are already .rpm and .deb packages for
R-0.50-a4 on the CRAN archives.

I have contributed an xlispstat package to the official collection of
packages for Debian Linux. (If you are looking for it, it is in the
unstable distribution because new packages are not generally added to
the stable distribution. Send me e-mail if you want to try to use it
because converting to unstable is not trivial.) As part of providing
the xlispstat package I registered as an official Debian developer.

I have held off making an official Debian package of R-0.50 because I
understand that there will be substantial changes in the organization
of the 0.60 release and that release is due out "real soon". Once
0.60 hits the streets I will try to make a Debian package of it. If
someone else wants to do that, please let me know and we can
coordinate. I don't feel that i have to be the official converter - I
am happy to let someone else do it if they want.

A Debian package can be converted to a .rpm file. I think it ends up
containing all the information that a native .rpm file contains. That
may be a quick way to get a .rpm file for those who want that format.

For R I will try to create both "stable" (i.e. Debian 1.3.1) and
"unstable" (Debian 2.0) packages. Only the "unstable" will be
officially distributed as part of Debian.
