What's stopping you?  I am running R on Macs right now.
However the Mac version is WAY behind unix.

My solution:
switch to linux!  Quite a move for a Mac user, but I am in the process of
setting up linux box (should arrive this week).  If all works out I am
dumping the Mac.  I will use LyX for document preparation.  It will be
nice to be M$-free.

BTW linux is available for Apple machines as well. So I can switch those
machines over eventually if I want to.
