R-beta: I cannot get to the Archives, so here are 2 questions

May be they appear in archives but my netscape cannot get the archives somehow (moved?): 

How do you set seed in R? (for generate random numbers)  ?set.seed  returns nothing. 

How do you save your own function/data?  I am using Win95/NT version, upon exiting 
R ask if I want to save the IMAGE,   (not the data/function) and if I say yes,  and click OK 
and start R again I lost the function.
