Using GNU make 3.76.1 under Solaris 5.5.1 gives

checking whether we are using GNU C... yes
checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes
checking for ranlib... (cached) ranlib
checking for g77... /local/gnu/bin/g77
checking for underscore after Fortran symbols... configure: error: Nothing worked - cannot use FORTRAN


What can I do about this? 

I know this was reported before on the list, but
I have not found any solution in the archives.
