I was the person who created that rpm file but I did so by converting
a Debian linux .deb file. Apparently the rpm program performs checks
that are not done (or perhaps not needed) when installing a .deb file.

Those dependencies are spurious. The references to @PERL@ were caused
by my forgetting to remove the .in versions of scripts such as
$RHOME/etc/Rdconv.

I have a new version of the .deb package without those problematic
files. There was also a problem with one script that had an explicit
dependence on /usr/local/bin/perl. I believe that should be fixed in
the 0.61.1 release of R.

For the time being I think it should work to use --nodeps. Please let
me know if you have difficulties.

I have difficulty testing the .rpm files because I am not running
RedHat Linux. Is there anyone running RedHat 5.0 who would be willing
to test an installation for me? I can generate the RedHat 5.0
packages much easier than I can generate the RedHat 4.2 package.
