Actually, R is consistent with version 3.3 of S-Plus, if I'm not
mistaken.  The above construct with ";" before the "else" would give
parse error in S-Plus 3.3, but _not_ in S-Plus 3.1.  So I really feel
that R is doing the right thing here.
