gnu make does not work for me either:

%> /opt/gnu/gnubin/make help
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `../src/library/*/man/*.Rd'
Current working directory /opt/as/R-0.61.1/etc
make: [build-help] Error 1 (ignored)

%> /opt/gnu/gnubin/make -v
GNU Make version 3.75, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
