R-beta: executable problem

My best guess is that R is asking for more memory than your system has
available. I've put some message boxes in the version I'm working on now
(still 0.5 vintage though) and I should have it out soon. You could try
rebooting and making sure that all other applications are closed. You
could also have a look in the registry (using regedit) and remove the
NSize and Vsize records under R. One of the bad things about Windows95 and
NT is the registry. It maintains a record of things even after the software
has been removed. Re-installing software often doesn't fix all the necessary
files in registry and so some problems can't be solved by reinstallation.
