R-beta: Choice of Linux for R and other things

Not an easy question. There are both RedHat and Debian users on this list, so
I'm sure you'll get a few viewpoints.

I've been using Debian (and contributing to it) for over three years now, and
am still impressed by its power and flexibility. I upgraded four Debian
releases seamlessly during that time. Have a look at www.debian.org. Some
folks say that RedHat is easier to set up which I can't judge as I never
tried it. It's a matter of preferences and style, much like the vi vs emacs
debate.

That being said, both R and Xlispstat already come with Debian (thanks to
Douglas Bates), as well as a few other numerical goodies, and all things TeX
are provided by the teTeX packages.  I also had a look at Xplore, so I can
assure you that it runs without under Debian.
