ML and REML estimates of variance components in many models can be
obtained with the lme library in the src/contrib section of CRAN.
When you expand the tar file there is a subdirectory called SAS_Mixed
with transcripts of example analyses paralleling those in the book
"SAS System for Mixed Models".  If you are familiar with SAS PROC
MIXED that might be a faster way to learn lme syntax that going
through the manual pages.

Also there is work being done to produce functions in R that parallel
the aov in S-PLUS.
