The next version of Mingw32 will be out at around that time.  It would
be useful if your new version of R binary had been compiled with it
since the next Mingw32 version *may* have the popen problem fixed...

Mumit Khan comment in GNU list: "If anybody has a "reasonable" popen
lookalike for win32 *and* willing to put it under GPL, please let me
know. Currently mingw32 windres (and other codes that uses popen/pclose)
doesn't work reliably on all versions of Win95 and I'd really like to
see this fixed. Would be nice to have it working by the time egcs-1.1
comes out sometime next month.  I snarfed one from Perl Win32 module,
but my rather limited knowledge of Win32 makes it hard to know how
usable it is."

I have passed on your suggestion about djgpp libc.
