He is confusing you. S-poetry is not a book, it is an on-line manuscript
of a declined book proposal (I am told by a publisher), available at

http://www.seanet.com/~pburns/Spoetry
http://www.i-way.co.uk/~pat/Spoetry

in PDF last time I looked. It is about S-PLUS, written by a former
MathSoft employee.

I am going to stick my neck out and say you need a good book on S-PLUS, say

Venables, W.N. & Ripley, B.D. (1997) Modern Applied Statistics with
S-PLUS. Second Edition. Springer.

and then read both of

R's FAQ

The `R' complements to V&R2, available from a mirror near you via
http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/MASS/sites.html. (A new version updated
for 0.63 will be available by Monday, together with a new release
of R versions of the libraries and scripts.)

to understand some of the differences.
