  Sorry to respond twice.

  More poking around identifies (under "?par")

    tck: The length of tick marks as a fraction of the
          smaller of the width or height of the plotting
          region.  If `tck=1', grid lines are drawn. The
          default setting is to use `tcl=-0.5' (see below).
 
  If we had a col.tick  (and possibly a lty.tick) parameter as well that
would provide a bit more flexibility for plotting grids ...
