A good place to start would be "Structure and Interpretation of Computer
Programs" by Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman, with Julie Sussman
(cited by Ross in his "R: Past and future history" paper, which you can
find on CRAN).  This is an introduction to computing using Scheme, one
of the languages on which R is based.  You can review the first chapter,
which is in fact quite a large chunk of the book, online
