[R] Installing ncurses3 for R in Linux

A few weeks ago I installed ncurses3 and R for Linux (Red Hat 5.2). Since then I
messed up the boot sequence when I installed OS/2's Boot Manager (added some
partitions and could not boot from the boot floppy - by the time I figured out
what I should have done to boot from Boot Manager I had re-installed Linux). I
have Boot Manager booting Linux and OS/2 now but cannot re-install R in Linux.
When I originally installed ncurses3 I had gotten some error messages about
ncurses-4. something already installed but somehow I had managed to install
ncurses3and then R and it worked. Now I cannot get ncures3 re-installed even
though I'm using the same binary (I had saved everything to tape before screwing
up Linus). I've checked the RPM's and everything is OK. If I don't use --force I
get an error message saying ncurses-4 something is already installed. If I use -U
--force there are no error messages but ncurses3 is not installed and R won't
install. -i --force doesn't seem to work either.

Who's bright idea was it to link R and ncurses3?! Does anyone have an idea why I
can't re-install ncurses3? Previoiusly I had seemed to have both ncurses and
ncurses3 installed. It shouldn't be this hard. I thought I understood how to use
the rpm command.
