Thanks to Robert Gentleman and Professor Ripley for the pointer to
library(date).  It works now.

One more question: are R and Splus using the same ratetable? If not,
which seems to be the case, which one is more "accurate"?

When I tried the following in Splus 3.4 for AIX 3.2.5 and Splus 5.1
for AIX 4.3.1, I got different results.

survexp(~ratetable(year=julian(6,1,1991),
  sex=1,age=35*365.24),times=(0:30)*365.24)

On R, upon replacing julian by mdy.date, I got yet a third answer.

julian(6,1,1991) in both Splus versions, as well as
as.numeric(mdy.date(6,1,1991)) in R, gave the same 11474.
