Referring to the use of bitmap() Prof Brian D Ripley wrote:

It is. I get a png file which when imported into Word gives a good
quality graphic when we need black lines on a white background. The
advantage of bitmap() over png() is that it's possible to set the
resolution to something much better than a screen dump.

There is a slight problem in that both dimensions are slightly smaller
than the corresponding postscript produced graphic. I suspect it has
something to do with rounding errors in the process of getting precise
numbers of pixels into the stated dimensions. It might be tricky if
it were necessary to fit to a scale exactly, though.

Many thanks to Prof Ripley.
